“March: Book Three,” a graphic novel created and written by Congressman John Lewis with Andrew Aydin and illustrated by Nate Powell, on Monday was named the 2017 winner of the Young Adult Library Services Association ( YALSA) Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults Award at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Meeting  & Exhibits in Atlanta.

The book focuses on the civil rights movement from the fall of 1963 through the signing of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson.

The book follows Lewis, leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and his fellow student activists.

“The artwork brings to life the brutality, loss and successes members experienced while carrying out a series of nonviolent protests to overcome local barriers  and exercise their right to vote,” ALA reported.

This is the second major win for Lewis’s graphic novel.

In November, “March: Book Three” won the National Book Award, the first time for a graphic novel.

Lewis represents Georgia’s 5th Congressional District.
