Dr. Angela Davis will be honored during a virtual ceremony on Friday, June 19 or Juneteenth, by the Birmingham, Alabama, Civil Rights Institute where the author and activist will receive the Fred L. Shuttlesworth Award.
“The Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award is the highest award given by the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute that honors outstanding individuals for their significant contributions to civil rights and human rights.
Davis, who was born in Birmingham, will be interviewed by Professor D. Wendy Greene, the first African American woman to become a tenured law professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
In January 2019, the Civil Rights Institute announced that it would honor Davis with the award but withdrew it because of objections by board members and others that she was in support of Palestinians. After a backlash, the board decided to reinstate the award. Click here for further information about the ceremony: The event is free
