A complex relationship

In the 2009 Mobilization and Change Survey, 54.4 % of black millennials said they knew someone who experienced harassment or violence by the police.

In the same survey, however, 71% of black millennials said they believe police in their neighborhoods are there to protect them.

The relationship between police and black millennials is complex, according to a new report titled “Black Millennial in America.”

The Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago reported yesterday the shooting deaths of unarmed black teenagers at the hands of police and those who act like the police have sparked #Black Lives Matter movement.

“We know that young blacks are more likely to be harassed by the police. We know that they are more likely to mistrust encounters with the police,” said Cathy Cohen, chair of the political science department at the University of Chicago and leader of the Black Youth Project. “But we also know from actually collecting data that a majority of them believe that police in their neighborhood are actually there to protect them, so I think it provides us more complexity.”
