Former Brazilian soccer star Pele has dismissed claims that he has become a recluse due to a hip injury that makes it difficult for him to walk.
Pele’s son, Edinho, told Globo Esporte, the Brazilian news outlet, that Pele was depressed and reluctant to leave his house.
Pele countered, however, saying that he feels good and accepts his physical limitations. He will celebrate his 80th birthday in October. He has kept some of his recent appearances in a wheelchair because it is difficult for him to walk unaided.
“I have good days and bad days. That is normal for people my age. I am not afraid, I am determined, confident in what I do,” he said.
Pele is considered one of the greatest footballers ever. He is the only player to win three World Cups. This summer will mark the 50th anniversary of his third World Cup title, won in Mexico in 1970.
