The Guardian newspaper is reporting that Barstow, California, police shot to death an unarmed father of three and wounded a woman passenger while responding to reports of a suspicious car parked in a Walmart parking lot.

Police shot and killed Diante Yarber, 26, on the morning of April 5th. Yarber had driven his cousins and friends to the local Walmart. One if his passengers, a 23-year-old woman who was seated in the back seat, was wounded in the barrage. Police, however, treated her like a suspect before getting her medical attention, according to The Guardian’s story.

“The police saw a car full of black people in front of Walmart and they decided that was suspicious,” Lee Merritt, attorney for Yarber’s family, told The Guardian “They just began pouring bullets…it’s irresponsible. It’s dangerous. It’s mind-boggling, the use of force.”

Police claimed they had a report the car was stolen but Diante’s aunt Aleta Yarber said the vehicle was never reported stolen. Police also claimed Diante Yarber used the car to ram a police car.  The car was returned to the aunt and she said car was not damaged.
