Deadly police shootings

Minnesota police murder black male motorist reaching for his ID

By Frederick H. Lowe

Police shot to death a black-male motorist during a traffic stop Wednesday night in Falcon Heights, Minn., in front the victim’s girlfriend and their four-year old daughter.

The deadly shooting of Philando Castile, 32-year-old kitchen supervisor for the St. Paul School District, was captured on Facebook video. Castile’s deadly shooting follows the Baton Rouge, La., police murder of Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old father of five, Tuesday morning.

St. Anthony, Minn., police pulled over the car Castile was driving, because of a broken tail light.

Castile told the police officer he was carrying a gun for which he had a license. He was reaching for his identification when a cop of Asian heritage fired four shots, killing him. In the video Castile is seen bleeding from his shoulder and chest in a blood-soaked white t-shirt. He slumps down before dying.

Clarence Castile, Castile’s uncle, said his nephew would not pull a gun on the police. He said his nephew was one of a “string of young black men being murdered by police.”

On the video, a gun is seen pointing through the driver’s side window at Castile. The unnamed cop tells Reynolds he told Castile not to move. She counters, saying you told him to get his ID.

“Oh my god, please don’t tell me that he’s gone. Please, officer, don’t tell that you just did this to him,” said Diamond Reynolds, who identified herself as Castile’s girlfriend.  She also uses the name Lavish Reynolds. Police later handcuffed and arrested Reynolds.

“He’s licensed to carry. He was trying to get out his ID and his wallet out his pocket and the officer just shot him in the arm.”

The police shooting death of Castile sparked protests at Gov. Mark Dayton’s mansion in St. Paul, Minn.  Falcon Heights, a city of 5,300, is located between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Police have killed 600 people so far this year, according to the website Killed by Police.
