Black men have been urged not to drink milk because many are lactose intolerant, which means their bodies cannot properly digest milk. The intolerance causes abdominal cramping, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

Karl, my brother, vomited after drinking milk, although our parents, like most parents, were led to believe that milk was good for us. Milk’s opponents argue that it contributes to obesity, calcium deficiency, allergies, heart disease, cancer, and other ailments. They argue that claims regarding milk’s benefits are merely advertising campaigns designed to promote dairy sales and that many nutritious alternatives to cow’s milk exist.

Milk producers aired a television commercial that announced “Milk does a body good.” On it’s website, Dean Foods has a photograph of the a smiling black girl seated next to a glass of milk.

Celebrities like Whoppi Goldberg and Tiger Woods acted in television commercials urging blacks to drink milk. To show their love of milk, they boasted milk moustaches. They were roundly criticized for participating in the commercials.

Dean Foods, a 94-year-old Dallas-based company, has struggled in recent years because Americans are drinking less and less cow’s milk.

This year Dean Food’s sales tumbled 7% in the first half of the year, and profits fell 14%. Dean Foods stock has lost 80% of its value this year.

The company, which makes some of the country’s most recognizable milk and dairy products, including Dairy Pure, Organic Valley and Land O’Lakes, has blamed its struggles on the “accelerated decline in the conventional white milk category.”
