Black jobless rate was 6.0 percent in September; Overall unemployment was 3.7 percent

September’s unemployment rate for black men and black women was 6.0 percent as the nation’s nonfarm businesses added 134,000 jobs overall and the unemployment rate dropped to  3.7 percent, the lowest since 1969.

The overall jobless rate for blacks a year earlier was 6.8 percent.

The jobless rate for black men 20 and older was 5.8 percent, down from 6.5 percent a year earlier.

The jobless rate for African-American women 20 years old and older 5.3 percent down from 5.9 percent a year earlier.

Although the black unemployment rate improved, it was still much higher than other ethnic and racial groups.

The jobless rate for Asians was 3.5 percent, whites 3.3 percent  and Hispanics 4.5 percent.
Job gains occurred in business and professional services, health care and transportation and warehousing.
