London Breed, president of the San Francisco Board of supervisors, was sworn in Tuesday morning as the city’s acting mayor, following the sudden death hours earlier of Mayor Edwin Lee.
The 65-year-old Lee, San Francisco’s first Chinese mayor, died of a heart attack, said Willie Brown, the city’s former mayor and its first black mayor.
Breed, 43, is supervisor for District 5, which encompasses many neighborhoods, including Inner Sunset, Haight Ashbury, the Lower Haight and Fillmore.
Her grandmother raised her in Plaza East Public Housing in the Western Addition. She graduated from the University of California at Davis with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a minor in African-American Studies.
Breed also earned a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco.
