Shaun King

 Black Lives Matter leader will address Islamophobia

 Shaun King, of Black Lives Matter, will deliver the keynote address 5 p.m. today (Saturday] for the Washington Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

The presentation is being held at the Meydenbauer  Center in Bellevue, Washington, near Seattle. 

King will speak on the intersection between Islamophobia and racism.

Frederick Douglass Awards announced

Marc Mauer, executive director of Washington, D.C-based The Sentencing Project, has been named as one of 200 individuals who best embodies the spirit of Frederick Douglass. The award out on the 200th anniversary of Frederick Douglass’s birth in February 1818.  The award is sponsored by the Frederick Douglass  Family Initiatives and the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University in partnership with The Guardian newspaper.

Mauer was selected because of anti-incarceration activism around the country.

Other awardees include Colin Kaepernick, Bryan Stevenson, Michelle Obama, Harry Belafonte and Lin-Manuel Miranda. A full list of the awardees will be published in The Guardian.

The awards will be presented during a reception February 14, 2019,  at the Library of Congress.

Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader and abolitionist orator. writer, and statesman. Douglass founded The North Star, an anti-slavery newspaper in 1847, in Rochester, New York.
