Kanye West’s comments are a painful reminder of a racist politican’s long-ago comments

Rapper Kanye West’s comments that ‘slavery was a choice’ are very similar to ones made by “Pitchfork” Ben Tillman, the racist governor South Carolina from 1890 to 1894 and later a U.S. Senator from 1895-1918.

West tweeted to TMZ, “When you hear about slavery for 400 years, for 400 years, that sounds like choice.”

“Pitchfork” Ben Tillman

Tillman, also a leader of the Red Shirts, a white supremacist Democratic Party-based paramilitary group, told a large gathering of  blacks to angry hoots and catcalls that ‘slavery was the best thing that ever happened to them.’

Tillman was described as a one-dimensional cartoonish character with a lot of power who supported lynching blacks, according to the excellent book “At The Hands of Persons Unknown: The Lynching of Black America” by Philip Dray.
