Rickey Dale Wyatt, who served nearly 31 years in prison for a rape he did not commit, has become the 325th person exonerated based on DNA evidence, the Innocence Project reported on Monday.
A Dallas County Judge sentenced Wyatt to 99 years for a rape that occurred Nov. 1, 1980. Wyatt maintained his innocence and refused a plea bargain.
The Dallas District Attorney’s Conviction Integrity Unit and the Innocence Project of Texas secured Wyatt’s release on Jan. 4, 2012, based on DNA evidence and the failure of the previous district attorney to turn over evidence proving his innocence.
Since his release, the Conviction Integrity Unit conducted a thorough reinvestigation of the case, concluding that Wyatt was innocent.
