U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee investigating the possible impeachment of President Donald Trump, died Tuesday in a Baltimore hospice.
Representative Cummings, who represented Baltimore’s 7th Congressional District since 1996, was 68.
“Congressman Cummings was an honorable man who proudly served his district and nation with dignity, compassion and humility,” Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, his wife, said in a statement.
Representative Cummings who walked with assistance of walker, had not returned to Congress this week, following its recess, missing votes.
Cummings chaired the Congressional Black Caucus from 2003 to 2004.
