Voters carried Kweisi Mfume to victory in the recent Democratic primary for Baltimore 7th Congressional District, a seat he held for five consecutive terms before resigning to run the NAACP in 1996.
After Mfume decided against seeking re-election in 1996, voters elected Elijah Cummings the district’s Congressman. Mr. Cummings served in Congress from 1996 to his death on October 17, 2019.
Mfume defeated 23 other candidates, including Mr. Cummings’ widow, Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, in the Democratic primary. Rockeymoore Cummings plans to run again.
Republican Kimberly Klacik won the Republican primary in the heavily Democratic district.
The two will face off on April 28 to determine who will serve out the remainder of Mr. Cummings’ term which ends in January 2021.
Klacik came under the national spotlight when she tweeted photos of Baltimore’s garbage-strewn streets. President Donald Trump chimed in, calling the 7th District, “a rodent, infested mess.”
