U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) has hired Trudy Perkins as communications director in his personal office. Perkins is the first black communications director in the U.S. Senate since D. J. Jordan left in August 2018.
She is one of approximately 340 top Senate staffers who serve as chiefs of staff, legislative directors, communication directors or full committee staff directors.
Before joining Brown’s staff, Perkins served as communications specialist, communications director and deputy chief of staff/communications director for the late Congressman Elijah Cummings.
The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a Washington, D. C.-based think tank for black elected officials, commended Brown for hiring Perkins.
“I hope other senators follow his lead and recruit talented black staff to top positions,” said Dr. LaShonda Brenson, senior fellow of diversity and inclusion of the Joint Center.
