He wins second-consecutive World Drivers Championship

Lewis Hamilton stood on the top of his car before jumping into the outstretched arms of his excited racing team after winning his second-consecutive Formula 1 World Drivers Championship and his third title overall during Sunday’s United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.

Hamilton, a black Englishman, defeated Nico Rosberg, his Mercedes AMG teammate and rival, who finished second. Sebastian Vettel, who drives for Ferrari, finished third. Hamilton won his first championship in 2008 and he also won in 2014.

With three more races remaining—Mexico, Brazil, Abu Dhabi— in the  2015 F1 season, Hamilton sealed the championship after accumulating 327 unassailable points. Vettel accumulated 251 points and Rosberg 247.

The 30-year-old Hamilton won 10 races this season and 43 so far in his career.

Rosberg, who began the race in the pole position, was a sore loser. Some spectators call him “Baby Rosberg.” They posted photoshopped photographs of him sucking on a pacifier.

After the race had ended, Hamilton tossed Rosberg the second-place Pirelli baseball cap. Rosberg, who was simmering in a comfortable chair, looked at the black and yellow cap before angrily throwing it back at Hamilton. Hamilton put on first-place cap before turning his back on Rosberg and walking away.

Gleefully swinging his arms, a beaming Hamilton lept and skipped to the winners’ podium where he was interviewed by singer Sir Elton John. Hamilton thanked his racing team and his family. John then interviewed Rosberg who said he was disappointed to lose the race.

Vettel congratulated Hamilton on winning the World Drivers Championship and shook his hand. Hamilton was handed a Texas-size first-place trophy that he kissed and tossed into air before catching it.

He then opened a magnum of champagne, swallowed a couple of big gulps before spraying Vettell, Rosberg, the audience and the Formula 1 women with the bubbly. After the race, Hamilton told Elton John he was ready to party. John said he was performing that night.

The crowd swarmed onto the track chanting”Lewis, Lewis” to thunderous applause.

With his third World Drivers Championship, Hamilton becomes a member of a very select club. Hamilton joins 10 other F1 racers who have won three or more World Drivers titles.

The race was held a day after rain storm caused by Hurricane Patricia soaked the area.
