Lovie Smith is fired only a year after becoming head coach of the Houston Texans
The Houston Texas football club fired Lovie Smith as head coach only a year after taking over the team.
Nick Caserio spoke to Smith and explained that the team was moving in a new direction, said CEO Cal McNair in a statement.
Smith spent 2021 as the associate head coach before taking over as head coach.
He was head coach at Illinois from 2016 to 2020. He led the Chicago Bears to the Superbowl losing to Colts in Super Bowl XLI. The Colts defeated the Bears by a score of 29–17.
It was the first time two Black head coaches– Tony Dungy and Smith– faced off against each other.
The Bears fired Smith after the team lost the Super Bowl.
