Muddy Waters’ House is a Chicago Landmark

The House where Muddy Waters lived when he first moved to Chicago has been designated a national landmark.

Waters and his family lived for nearly two decades on the first floor of the home at 4339 S. Lake Park Ave. in the Kenwood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side.

He played host to music legends, including Howlin’ Wolf and Chuck Berry, on the second floor. Waters and his contemporaries practiced in the basement.

The city designated the house a Chicago landmark last October, and this spring the nonprofit received $250,000 from the Commission on Chicago Landmarks for exterior renovations and a grant of $116,152 from the city for interior renovations.

The house has been unoccupied for more than a decade. The Mojo Museum eventually plans to open exhibit space on the first floor and a recording studio and music room in the basement. Muddy Waters died on April 30, 1983.
