Governor Gavin Newson appoints Laphonza Butler to the U.S. Senate
California Governor Gavin Newsom has named Laphonza Butler as the replacement for Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who died on September 29 at 90.
Sen. Feinstein’s term ends in January. Said she would not run again. Bulter will finish her term.
Butler is president of EMILY’s List, a political action committee based in Washington. Bulter lives in Washington, but she has lived in California.
Vice President Kamala Harris will swear in Butler on Wednesday for the U.S. Senate.
Bulter will be the first openly LGBTQ person to represent California in the U.S. Senate.
