Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw is stepping down

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw, the first Black woman to hold the post in the city, announced that she is stepping down to take another job.

She will soon take a top security position with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Outlaw submitted her registration letter on August 25. She will leave the department on September 22.

Outlaw will join the New York-area transit system, Mayor Jim Kenney said Tuesday, ending a turbulent three years in which she guided the 6,000-member department through pandemic lockdowns, Black Lives Matter protests, and frequent turmoil over race and policing.

John Stanford, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw’s second-in-command, will serve as the interim commissioner following her departure.
