Kelvin Kipturn set a world record in Sunday’s Bank of America Chicago Marathon, running the 26. 219 mile course in 2:00.35.
Kipturn, a 23-year-old from Kenya, defeated last year’s winner, Benson Kiputo, who ran the course at 2:04:02.
Kipturn said he always felt in control as he broke the record once held by Eluide Kipchoge, another Kenyan runner. He finished first in the 2014 Chicago marathon in 2:14:11.
In September, Kipchoge won the 2022 Berlin Marathon decisively in a time of 2:01:09, beating by 30 seconds his own previous world record, which he set on the same course in 2018.
