Raphael Warnock takes Georgia
The epic battle for Georgia’s U.S. Senate seat between Sen. Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker was won by Warnock in a squeaker that was a surprise.Â
Sen. Warnock won 50.9 percent, or 1,754,834 votes, compared to Walker’s winning 49.1 percent of the vote, or 1,695, 955 votes. Ninety-nine percent of the vote was counted.
Warnock told the cheering crowd, “These are the most powerful words in a democracy: The people have spoken.” “You have got me for six more years.”
More than 1.4 million voters cast ballots in the election, said Brad Raffenperger, Georgia’s Secretary of State. The election campaign was conducted for 28 days and ended today. Early voting opportunities were available to Georgians for only one week.
Both candidates traded leads all evening, with Warnock pulling ahead and Walker catching up.
Warnock took the lead, surpassing Walker when large numbers of votes from Georgia’s heavily Democratic counties came in later in the evening, cinching Warnock’s victory.
The victory gives Democrats a 51 to 49 edge over Republicans in the U.S. Senate.
