Coco Gauff wins the French Open
Coco Gauff won the 2025 French Open at the Roland-Garros Complex on Saturday, defeating Aryna Sabalenka, who entered the women’s finals as the number one player in the world, compared to Gauff, who was ranked number two. After Gauff won the tournament, 6-7, 5-7, 6-2 and 6-4, she lay on her back on the clay court and stared up at the sky. She later admitted that she did not think she could do it. Her mother, Candi, watched the finals from the stands as Gauff’s father, Corey, who didn’t feel able to watch, admitted to roaming throughout the complex. Candi and Corey hugged their daughter tightly. At the awards ceremony, Sabalenka cried as she accepted the second-place trophy. She promised her disappointed team that she would be back stronger next year. Sabalenka said Gauff found a way to win the tournament. Gauff accepted the winner’s trophy. She held the trophy–Coupe Suzanne Lenglen–above her head and kissed it. She then walked around the complex holding it in the air, signaling her triumph. Commentators recognized her parents for believing in their daughter’s talent and encouraging her. Saturday’s win marked Gauff’s first victory at Roland-Garros and her second Grand Slam title. She won the U.S. Open in 2023 when she defeated Sabalenka in three sets. She was 19. Today’s two-hour-plus match between them saw an exchange of power with Sabalenka taking a 4-1 lead in the first set. Gauff rallied to force a tiebreaker, but Sabalenka claimed the first set. At one point during the match, Sabalenka became angry, shouting at her trainers in Russian. Her angry upset wasn’t explained.Gauff took control in the second set and charged towards a 4-1 lead of her own. Sabalenka won the next game, but the young American took the set 6-2. Gauff controlled the pace again in the third and won on the second match point after Sabalenka’s backhand went wide, and Gauff took the tournament. |
