Gunman murders 10 in a quiet suburb

An immigrant from China killed 10 people and wounded 10 others during the Lunar New Year’s Eve celebration in Monterey Park, California. The latest news reports indicate that one of the wounded individuals has died, bringing the total number dead to 11.

Police identified the man as Huu Can Tran, 72, who hid in a white van before turning a gun on himself.

Tran entered the Star Ballroom Dance Studio and opened fire. He had been a frequent visitor to the ballroom and had taught his former wife how to dance there.

He ran to Lai Lai Ballroom in Alhambra, but two people wrestled the gun away from Tran. He fled the premises, and the police were called.

Monterey Park, a city of 61,000 in the San Gabriel Valley, east of Los Angeles, is 65% Asian American, 27% Latino, and 6% white, according to census data.

It is not known what caused Tran to go on a killing spree.
