VP Harris is on the cusp of leading the world’s most powerful nation
And if she wins, she joins an elite international group of women leaders
Vice President Kamala Harris, will watch election returns Tuesday, which could make the nation’s first woman president, at Howard University, her alma mater.
If elected, Vice President Harris would join 174 women in modern history who either have led or are leading their country’s government.
We are not counting Queen Cleopatra VII Theo Philopaton who ruled from 51 to 30 B.C.
Pharaoh Hatshepsut ruled Egypt from 1507–1458 B.C.
She was the great royal wife of Pharaoh Thutmose II and the fifth Pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt. Pharaoh Hatshepsut brought great prosperity to Egypt.
Isabel Peron of Argentina became the first female head of state and president in 1974 following the death of her husband Juan Peron.
A president is elected directly by voters for a specific term.
While a prime minister is elected indirectly by the legislature for an unspecified term; they can be recalled at any time.
Both the president and prime ministers head the executive branch of government.
BlacksmansStreet.Today endorses Harris for president. She has strong ideas concerning health policy and home ownership.
Vice President Harris is laying out an agenda to give Black men the tools to build wealth and achieve financial freedom, lower costs for themselves and their families, and protect their rights—addressing the issues that Black men across the country have told her are their top concerns. She pledges to:
- Provide 1 million forgivable loans up to $20,000 to Black entrepreneurs and others who have a good idea but don’t have the resources, connections, or access to capital to get their business off the ground
- Launch a National Health Equity Initiative focused on Black men
- Legalize marijuana at the federal level to break down unjust legal barriers that hold Black men and other Americans back
- Lower costs by enacting the first-ever federal ban on corporate price-gouging for food and groceries
- Lower rent and provide down payment assistance to triple the number of new first-time Black homeowners
VP Harris graduated from Howard, one of the nation’s top schools, in 1986.
In Hilltop, the Howard University student newspaper, Harris recalled “so many fond memories” from when she attended the university, which she referred to by its nickname, “The Mecca.”
“I recognize my time at Howard shaped me into who I am today. At Howard, we learn that we can be great and also that we have the responsibility to work hard to live up to that potential each day,” Harris wrote.
Harris could join 174 women who headed governments across 87 countries.
Some of them include Angela Merkel of Germany, Margaret Thatcher of the U.K. , Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Mia Mottley of Barbados, Aung San Suu of Myanmar, Benazir Bhutto of Pakistan, Mihelle Bachelet of Chile, and Indira Gandhi of India.
Detractors called Gandhi Goongi goodiya” (Hindi for a “dumb doll”) at the beginning of her tenure.
Sound familiar. Donald Trump, who is running for president on the Republican ticket, has called Harris ‘stupid’ and ‘retarded.’ and much worse. Gandhi served from 1966 to 1977 when she was assassinated.
The latest was Claudia Sheinbaum who became Mexico’s first woman to be elected as president. She took office Oct. 1.
