Black man takes over as Canada’s speaker

The Honorable Greg Fergus was elected Canada’s Speaker of the House of Commons on October 3.

The former Speaker, Anthony Rota, was forced to resign as Speaker of the House after honoring a man who fought for a Nazi unit during the Second World War.

Fergus, who is 54, is the 38th speaker.

The speaker manages the House of Commons and supervises its staff.

It is also the speaker’s duty to act as a liaison with the Senate and the Crown.

Fergus has been serving the people of Hull-Aylmer in Parliament since October 2015.
