Queen Charlotte, the first Black Queen of England; Charlotte, N.C., is named in her honor

King George III is widely remembered for losing the American colonies and going mad.

Charlotte, North Carolina, the state’s largest city, is named in her honor.

“Many historians believe that Queen Charlotte was of mixed cultural heritage.”

Historian Mario de Valdes y Cocom argued in 1997 that the queen “was directly descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a Black branch of the Portuguese royal house.”
