Kamala Harris demands a recount of last week’s election
The Harris Campaign, representing the defeated presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic National Committee, and state Democratic parties, are demanding a recount of last week’s election that will put former President Donald Trump back into the White House, according to the site’s fundraising page.
The move comes after former president Donald Trump officially swept all seven battleground states and earned 312 electoral votes in the 2024 presidential race Tuesday. Harris won 226 electoral votes.
In some states, Trump beat Vice President Harris by a narrow margin, including less than one percentage point in Wisconsin and less than two points in Michigan.
Some states have laws that enact an automatic recount if the margin between two candidates is close enough, such as a margin of 0.5 percent of the overall vote.
If the margin doesn’t fall within the threshold for an automatic recount, candidates can still request a recount if the results meet specific margin requirements.
Each state has rules for initiating a recount, and requests must typically be made within a certain number of days after the election.
Harris conceded the election last week.
“I know some of you feel sad and disappointed,” Harris told Howard University students, their parents, and others who gathered on the school’s campus, which is located in Washington D.C.“This fight will take a while. Don’t ever give up. This is a fight for justice,” she said.
The fundraising page states that the “first $41,300 from individual contributors will go to the Democratic National Committee, and $15, 000 from a multi-candidate committee, or PAC, will be allocated for the recount efforts.
The next $3,300 from individual contributions and the next $5,000 from PAC money will be added to the coffers of the Harris for President Fund.”
