New chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Army General Mark A. Milley transferred the Joint Chiefs to Four Star Air Force General Charles O. Brown Jr. last week.

General Brown was the second Black man to be named Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Army General Colin Powell was the first Black man to hold the post. He was the 12th man to head the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving from 1989 to 1993.

Brown is the first Airman and fighter pilot to serve as the nation’s top military officer since 2005.
