Cop acquitted in the murder of pregnant Black woman

An Ohio jury of eight women and four men acquitted a policeman of murdering a pregnant woman and killing her unborn child, due this month, after shooting her in a supermarket parking lot for shoplifting $600 worth of liquor.

The verdict set off jubilation for the cop, Connor Grubb, who smiled after the verdict was read and hugged his wife.

It angered Ta’Kiya Young’s aunt, who screamed disapproval of the verdict.

“You killed her and her baby,” yelled Young’s grandmother, Nadine Young. “It’s not right. He gets to walk away free.”

Grubb had faced six charges of murder, felonious assault, and involuntary manslaughter.

On Aug. 24, 2023, Grubb, who worked for the Blendon Township police department, fatally shot Young during an interaction that lasted 10 seconds.

It began when Blendon Township Sgt. Erik Moynihan, who was helping a woman locked out of her car, was flagged down by a Kroger employee in the store’s parking lot.

The employee told Moynihan a woman had stolen from the store and pointed to Young’s vehicle, identifying her as a suspect.

Moynihan testified that he approached the driver’s side window and told Young to turn off her car and get out. She refused, saying she did not steal anything.

Officer Connor Grubb of the Blendon Township police, who came on the scene, police fired at Ta’Kiya Young through the car’s windshield vehicle moved forward, but did not hit Grubb.

Prosecutors argue Grubb’s conduct was unjustified, claiming Grubb wasn’t in instant danger. Bodycam video shows her car rolling slowly towards Grubb outside the Kroger store in a suburb of Columbus.

In footage, she could be heard asking: “Are you going to shoot me?”

She was suspected of shoplifting alcohol on August 24 2023.

The officer pleaded not guilty to murder, involuntary manslaughter, and felonious assault, arguing it was self-defence.

He was on leave from the department during the trial.

Young, 21, was 25 weeks pregnant with her third child.

She was also the mother of two boys, ages three and six years old. They no longer have mother,
