More women are in jail, and they are outpacing men
The number of women in jail has outpaced the men, according to preliminary findings of the U.S. Department of Justice.
In midyear 2022, about 14 percent of the jail population was female.
The female population, which was 9 percent, outpaced the male population in growth by 3 percent from midyear 2021 to midyear 2022.I
In 2021, the imprisonment rate for Black women (62 per 100,000) was 1.6 times the rate of imprisonment for white women (38 per 100,000).

Latinx women were imprisoned at 1.3 times the rate of white women (49 vs. 38 per 100,000).
