Biden issues warning about the U.S. Supreme Court

President Joe Biden walked across the Edmund Pettus Bridge on Sunday to commemorate the 58th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday,†during which marchers were beaten, kicked and trampled by Alabama state police officers.

Today the atmosphere was peaceful as more than 1,000 people joined President Biden in crossing the bridge named after a Klux Klux Klan leader.

Biden, however, warned that conservatives on the U.S. Supreme Court want to cut back on the Voting Rights Law signed by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965 and later updated.

“The fundamental right remains under assault. The conservative Supreme Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act over the years, ” Biden said.

Since the 2020 election, states have enacted dozens of anti-voting laws fueled by the “Big Lie†of election deniers now elected to office.

Over the last 20 years, states have put barriers before the ballot box — imposing strict voter ID laws, cutting voting times, reducing the number of voting sites, restricting registration, and purging voter rolls. These efforts, which received a boost when the Supreme Court weakened the Voting Rights Act in 2013, have kept significant numbers of eligible voters from the polls, hitting all Americans, but placing special burdens on racial minorities, poor people, and young and old voters, according to the Brennan Center for Justice.

President Biden promised to pursue legislation to bolster voting rights.
