Several days after 16-year-old Ralph Varl went to the wrong house to pick up his 11-year-old twin brothers, the homeowner shot him in the head and the arm on April 13. 

Varl, whose wounds were treated in the hospital for four days, has been released from in-patient care.  In Washington County, New York, Kaylin Gillis, 20, and three friends were headed to a friend’s home in rural Washington County on Saturday when they accidentally turned into Kevin Monahan’s driveway in Hebron. 

Monahan, 65, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, fired two shots from his porch at the car, one of which struck Gillis who was a passenger in the vehicle, killing her. 

‘This is a very sad case of some young adults that were looking for a friend’s house and ended up at this man’s house,’  Sheriff Jeff Murphy said on Monday. 

Monahan has been charged with second-degree murder. 

During his press conference on Monday, Murphy spoke to a group of reporters and Gillis’s family. 

The sheriff said the group did not initially realize they were at the wrong address but had started pulling out when the homeowner allegedly began shooting. 

‘While they were leaving the residence, once they determined they were at the wrong house, the subject came out on his porch for whatever reason and fired two shots. One which struck the vehicle that Kaylin was in,” Murphy said. 

Due to the incident occurring in a rural area with little cell phone support, the friends could not immediately call 911 for help. ï»¿The group had to drive miles to a nearby town in order to call first responders.  When the first responders arrived, they found that Gillis had already died.
